NEOM Oxagon Innovation Hub
Smart technology strategy and integration architecture for the world's first fully automated industrial city on the Red Sea coast.
Smart technology strategy and integration architecture for the Innovation Hub at NEOM Oxagon, the world's first fully automated industrial city and largest floating structure on the Red Sea coast, designed on 100% renewable energy with Industry 4.0 and circular economy principles from the ground up. Engagement covered concept and detailed master planning: emerging technology evaluation across robotics, AI-driven process optimisation, IoT, and digital platforms; cross-system integration architecture connecting industrial automation, building management, and public infrastructure; a phased deployment roadmap; and a compliance framework governing data privacy across sensitive industrial operations. Industry 4.0 manufacturing, AI orchestration, and community spaces were specified together during master planning.
Oxagon required a smart technology strategy for a district type with no precedent, a fully automated industrial innovation hub combining Industry 4.0 manufacturing, living-lab research facilities, residential areas, and public spaces within a 100% renewable energy environment. The technology architecture had to serve radically different use cases (high-security industrial automation, open research collaboration, and community amenity) within a single integrated framework, all defined during the concept and master planning phase before construction.
Led smart technology evaluation and strategy as Smart Technology Lead through Meinhardt Group during the concept and detailed master plan phases. Evaluated emerging technologies for hub operations across robotics, AI-driven process optimisation, IoT infrastructure, and digital platforms. Led cross-functional teams identifying deployment opportunities across industrial, residential, and public domains. Designed integration architecture connecting industrial automation systems, building management, and public infrastructure into a coherent operational framework. Developed a phased technology deployment roadmap aligned with the district's transformation stages from innovation lab to fully automated industrial showcase. Built the compliance and security framework governing data privacy across sensitive industrial operations.
Comprehensive smart technology strategy delivered for the Oxagon Innovation Hub master plan: covering technology evaluation, cross-system integration architecture, phased deployment roadmap, and compliance framework. Strategic blueprint established the technology foundation for a district embedding Industry 4.0 automation, IBM AI Robotics Orchestration Platform integration, and circular economy operations from first principles. Delivered during concept and detailed master planning, informing construction specification for Phase 2 development currently underway.
Embedding automation and AI from the ground up (in the design phase. Oxagon proves the principle at city scale: when smart systems are designed before the infrastructure is built, every layer from robotics orchestration to building management operates from a shared data architecture. The same logic applies to any new business system: design the integration layer first; it is far cheaper than connecting disconnected systems after the fact.

Nothing about Oxagon had a precedent, so when someone asked how a fully automated industrial city had been done before, the honest answer was that it hadn't. Balancing high-security industrial automation against open research collaboration and ordinary community space inside one framework produced more than a few disagreements about where the walls, literal and digital, should sit. What stays with me is that Oxagon's Phase 2 is now under construction on the architecture we set during the concept phase.
