AI Wrapper

An AI product whose main contribution is a user interface and a tuned prompt placed over a foundation model that another company builds and runs.

Implementation

An AI wrapper takes a foundation model from a provider, adds a screen, a prompt and perhaps a few templates, and sells or deploys the result as a product. Most of what the user experiences, the quality of the answers, comes from the model underneath. The wrapper’s own contribution is the layer the user touches.

Wrappers are a fast and cheap way to test whether an idea is useful, and many good products started as one. The weakness shows when the wrapper is also where the building stops. Anyone with access to the same model can copy it, the provider can ship the same feature to all of its users, and when the product gives a wrong answer there is usually no record, test or control underneath to explain or contain the failure.

The useful question about any AI product is what it would lose if the model provider changed tomorrow. A wrapper loses nearly everything. A system keeps its grounding data, its evaluation set, its permissions and its records of every call, and can move to another model with work. Those invisible parts are where the lasting value sits.
