AI systems that interpret and act on visual input, images or video, such as detecting defects, tracking progress, or reading a document's layout.

AI Strategy

Computer vision is the branch of AI that works on pixels rather than words: spotting a defect on a production line, tracking construction progress from site photos, reading the layout of a scanned document, or monitoring a video feed for a specific event. It’s often the least visible AI capability in a business, quietly running in the background of a quality-control or monitoring process, compared to the more conversational, attention-grabbing chat interfaces.

It’s also one of the more mature and reliable applications of AI in industrial and infrastructure settings, precisely because the task is usually narrow and well-defined: is there a crack in this weld, is this the right part, has this area changed since the last inspection. Narrow, well-defined tasks are exactly where current AI performs most consistently.

For someone building a career around this rather than deploying it, the practical version of the skill isn’t “I understand how a model works,” it’s “I can point a vision model at this specific real-world problem and get a usable answer,” which is a considerably narrower and more hireable skill than it sounds.
